It's funny how when I was younger I used to make fun of those folks that migrated south that were often referred to as "Snow birds". The label was often used to refer to retirees. Matter of fact my inlaws (ironically last name is "Byrd") migrated south to mid-Florida in the fall about 10 years ago. Since then, they visit migrate here in the north in the spring, stay until early fall, and then trek back to their abode in the southern sun.On this particular day (Saturday), I was sitting in my home office gazing out my office windows looking at the dreaded white stuff. Work that's been plaguing me for weeks has finally been caught up, it's pretty cold outside (about 10 degrees), and I can't help but wish I could migrate to a warmer climate. The thought of being couped up for the next 3 months waiting to thaw out before I can burn up some asphalt eats at me. The only respite is being able to read some of my favorite online reads in the form of Motorcycle blogs, reading past AMA issues, and reading the current RoadBike magazine. Cabin fever & PMS. What a dreadful combination to endure.
Ironically though, listening to the news tonight, they're forecasting cold weather lows of 26 degrees in Gainsville, Florida. But on the upside, they're still calling for high in the 60s to mid 70s during the day. To here my inlaws call and complain it's cold in Florida is pretty humorous in spite of the fact the current temp is 28 degrees here. LOL ;) At least they're not stuck here.
The upside to winter downtime however is the chance to catch up on some of the maintenance & upgrade projects my bike needs. I think I'll replace the brakes. Add a new quick-release Memphis Shades windshield, install a Highway Hawk highway bar, and get a fresh tuneup & oil change while I'm at it.
Although, If I ever get the chance to head to Florida, I may never look back. I think there's a beach & some long roads near the Gulf that are calling me a snow bird, and I'm definitely not a retiree.
